Lake Villa History on a Cold Winter's Day

Lake Villa History on a Cold Winter's Day

I love reading about the history of Lake Villa.  Did you know many Lake Villa farmers were iceman whose task it was to collect surface ice from lakes and ship the ice by train to Chicago.  According to Wikipedia ice would be cut with either a handsaw or a powered saw blade into long continuous strips and then cut into large individual blocks for transport by wagon back to an ice house. There was one such plant built on the south shore of Deep Lake in 1888.  Photo provided by the Village of Lake Villa Community website
