Grand Opening of the Lake Villa Historical Society 2014

The Historical Society has just moved from Cedar Street to Lake Avenue.  The Lake Villa Rescue Squad generously donated their building at   223 Lake Avenue to the Lake Villa Historical Society.  This building will be a permanent location for a village museum, meeting room and society office. The Ribbon cutting ceremony is today May 22nd from 5-7pm and Open House on 6/7 12-4pm.

2014 Summer Camp at Peacock Camp Lake Villa Township

Summer Camps are coming to Lake Villa's Peacock Camp

#LakeVillaTownship is excited to announce the 're' opening of #PeacockCamp and will be offering Adventure #SummerCamps for children entering kindergarten through 8th grade.  A training programs will also be offered for students entering grades 9 and 10.   Sessions include Swimming, Boating, Outdoor Adventure skills and STEM (Science, tech, engineering & math).  See their attached brochure for more information or go to their website at www.lakevillatownship.org.

2014 Lake Villa #St.Patrick's Day #Parade
March 15th at Noon
Come help fill the Caboose in #LakeVilla

Come to the Lake Villa St. Patrick's Day Parade on Saturday at Noon and bring a non-perishable food item to fill the caboose. The items will be collected on the parade route or can be dropped off at the Lake Villa VFW.  This is a fun way to help the Lake Villa #FoodPantry and celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

Parade route is as follows:  Starts at Palombi School,  North on McKinley Ave to Burnett, left on Burnett and then right on Sherwood Ave to Grand Avenue.  Left on Grand to Cedar Avenue.

Lake Villa Memories - Tegan's Resort on Deep Lake

Although my parents lived in Chicago during their young adult years, I was surprised to learn that they both had wonderful memories of the #LakeVilla area.  My Dad would travel out on the weekends with his boyfriends to spend the day in the sun on #CedarLake.  And my Mom worked in her teens as a summer housemaid at the #Tegan's Resort on #DeepLake.  She told me on the weekends the owner would take all the workers to the Antioch theater for a movie.   Photo courtesy of  Chain O'Lakes Postcard History Series.

 Winter Fun at Lake Villa's Ribfest 2014

Come on out to #Caboose Park (37908 Fairfield Road, Lake Villa) on Saturday, January 25 for #Lake Villa's #Ribfest.  The festival is Noon to 4pm with cooking to start at 7am & judging at 3pm.  Bring your appetite and non-perishable food items for the local food pantry.   There will be a rib eating contest and awards for the sauces, rubs and people's favorite.  For more information go to the Township website or call 847-356-2116.

Lake Villa History on a Cold Winter's Day

I love reading about the history of Lake Villa.  Did you know many Lake Villa farmers were iceman whose task it was to collect surface ice from lakes and ship the ice by train to Chicago.  According to Wikipedia ice would be cut with either a handsaw or a powered saw blade into long continuous strips and then cut into large individual blocks for transport by wagon back to an ice house.
